A Review of Nero Marquina Herringbone Honed Mosaic Tile

I was in the market for a black floor tile for my guest bathroom and stumbled across the Nero Marquina Black marble 1x3" Herringbone Honed Mosaic Tile from The Builder Depot. Like you, the first thing I looked for was example pictures of the floor installed and to my surprise, I did not find many images. As a result, I took a chance on this tile with Polyblend Plus Charcoal Unsanded Grout and man, did that turn out to be a great choice. Don’t take my word for it, judge by my photos below.

With any change made in my house, I want it to be something I love but also doesn’t scare off a future home buyer, in the event that I have to sell my home. Prior to having the Nero Marquina Herringbone black floor tile installed, I occasionally wondered about the following question:

Will Black Floor Tile Scare Off Future Home Buyers?

I would hesitate to use a black tile on shower walls since it would make the space feel smaller, reflect less light and show soap scum more. However, on the floor, I sing a different tune if everything else in the bathroom is designed on the lighter side because, let’s face it, no one wants a dark and dreary bathroom.

I discovered that balancing contrast is not easy to the everyday person and after showing pictures of my new bathroom to friends, colleagues, and acquaintances on the internet, everyone was wowed. Additionally, given that the average home on the market in Raleigh unfortunately still has a 1990s early 2000s look, I think this black herringbone floor tile with white elements and black accents make for a classic and timeless look that will have people thinking about this bathroom on their drive home from a showing.

Should you buy the Nero Marquina Herringbone Honed Mosaic Tile?

Each sheet of tile covers one square foot and I bought a quantity of 58 tiles for a grand total of $867.10. At the time of making this blog post, the Nero Marquina (Black Marble) 1x3" Herringbone Honed Mosaic Tile is listed as 14.95 per square foot.

Everyone says black tiles show everything but I do believe that using the Honed tile and not the polish, helps to not “see everything.” One month after the installation of the floor tile, I haven’t vacuumed or mopped because I want to see what it’s really like having black floor tile. The one time I did wipe a spot on the tile was after my dirty sandals got wet and left a dirt mark on the tile (which also shows on my white bathroom tile floor).

Because these tiles are honed, have a white vein and a slight weathered look, they do not look dirty or show a lot of dirt. If you have OCD, the white veins will probably drive you crazy since it the white vein may appear like the floor is never clean. In terms of installation, the contractors did not have a hard time with this tile. All in all, I would buy this again for another project so I rate this as a BUY!

What was my Buying Experience from The Builder Depot Like?

My order was placed and received on Saturday, July 1st, 2023 and shipped out on Monday, July 3rd, 2023. The Builder Depot stayed true to the following claim on their page: “Orders ship out on an average of 1-2 Business Days of receiving payment.” Additionally, as promised, a phone call was made to setup a delivery window. In my case, the delivery window truly didn’t matter since I would be at work.

The tiles were delivered on Friday, July 7th, 2023 on a palette by LTL Freight, as described in the product listing. I was impressed by the fact that not a single tile was damaged. Hats off to the Builder Depot crew since I included 15% extra tile in my order just in case any were damaged.
